Meet some of the dancers that frequent our club weekly!
Joe and Patti
My wife and I have been married for 32 years. The salsa lessons are a perfect way for us to have a “date night” each week and it’s great exercise. We have been in the beginners class for over a year (yes, that’s unusual, but we enjoy all the refresher lessons and trust me it’s all starting to come together). Teaching an old dog new tricks has been a challenge for Sujan and Sarah, but we have as much fun laughing at each other as we do learning how to dance. We have no desire to be real good at it. We just enjoy the people, the instructors, and getting out to do something together as a couple.

The first night I came to a salsa party was fairly interesting to say the least. My buddies convinced me to come because he told me he danced with some cute girls, so I figured I would try it. Luckily, Sujan and Sarah are good teachers because dancing, at least Latin dancing, was not quite my specialty. The girls who had to dance with me during the lesson were as nice as they could be because I struggled a bit that night. I enjoyed salsa dancing so much that I decided to come back and I even went to a group lesson. I got hooked on it and I’ve been coming ever since. I still have the occasional mess-ups here and there but I catch on a lot quicker now, and I feel like I improve every time I get on the dance floor. So there is hope out there for anyone who believes they can’t dance! Just remember Sujan and Sarah took a redneck and made him into the Salsa Redneck.

Two words encapsulate my experience at Salsa Mississippi–wholesome and addictive. Since my first bachata class, I have been hooked on the engaging instruction, the positive atmosphere, and the collective of eclectic people that frequent the studio. Dancing is a gift of expression and revitalization. Coming to Salsa Mississippi is my prescription for happiness. Cheaper than medication or visits to a therapist. The movement and high energy of each class get my endorphins pumping. If you are “allergic to exercise” like me, dancing at La Salsa is so much fun that I never notice working up a sweat. Salsa Mississippi is holistically good for me. Good people. Good place. Good for the body, mind, and soul.

As an anonymous dancer/author explains, “I get up, I walk, I fall down. Meanwhile I keep on dancing.” The energy produced while dancing captivates harmony. Presently, I only stand on the foothills of the mountaintop, yet I imagine what fluidity can be created with seemingly effortless movement. Learning to accept the rhythm of music through dancing salsa has been, and still is, an enjoyable experience for me. Sujan with his artistic talent that influences his character, and Sarah with her impeccable professionalism; both welcomed me to join the embracement of salsa! It’s been long awaited for a place rich in variety, feeling, and taste to join the area. Every corner of the dance studio exemplifies what enjoying life should be.

Growing up, I was never a dancer. I never danced at high school or college dances. I was the guy who would be quick to tell you “I don’t dance!” and getting me on the dance floor was like pulling teeth. But Salsa Mississippi changed all of that. I was invited by a friend to a rooftop party that was being hosted by Salsa Mississippi. I remember standing there thinking that I could never be good at Salsa. After recovering from that night, I returned to the club a month later for lessons and I was amazed at the speed in which I was picking moves up. The highlight of my week was Salsa lessons and parties. But Salsa Mississippi isn’t just a place to learn salsa, it’s also a community. The best memories that I’ve made haven’t been on but off the dance floor. I’ve made friends from all types of backgrounds. I wouldn’t be surprised if it has the most diverse customers in Jackson. I’m so thankful for Sujan, Sarah, and the rest of the community at Salsa Mississippi. I’m glad that I can call them friends.
